Labour’s internal problems continue to grow with the refusal of Dundee East Labour to accept a £1000 donation from former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Lesley Brennan, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate in the ultra marginal SNP held constituency, stated that her original instinct was to ‘not accept’. This was later agreed and supported by the local Labour group who agreed that the donation would be dismissed.
This humiliating news demonstrates further divides between Labour, who are running scared in Scotland.
At a time when Ed Miliband and the Labour leadership are trying desperately to show that the party has moved on from the Blair years, these donations seem somewhat contradictory. It appears that what ever Labour do, Tony Blair is never far behind.
Questions must surely be asked over the stability of the relationship between Scottish Labour and Labour HQ– who clearly remain at odds over the direction in which to take, as the election draws ever closer. At a time when parties should be running a well oiled-national machine, Scottish Labour appear set on doing their own thing, with as little influence from Labour high command as possible.
When campaign funds are most desperately needed and with some constituencies accepting the donation, it is almost certain that Labour have a massive leadership deficit and deep divide in opinion over their own past.
